I have ordered lightroom 4 as I am having a little bit of a problem with CS2 and save for the web

I was thinking of getting Photoshop Elements 11 dose any one know how much is missing from elements 11 to CS2.

Hi Phil,

Elements 11 is new, and from what I can gather may be a step back from 10, but any way the only thing that will be missing is being able to edit in 16 bit, which is not a problem as Lightroom 4 is 16 bit, full stop. For my own personal work I now work almost exclusively in Lightroom, it covers everything for me from DAM's to final output.... If I need a little bit of pixel level editing then I use Elements 10.... In fact since moving to Mac I have not felt any need for Photoshop CS, whatever version... Take time to learn LR4, you won't regret it....

All the best

Phil

Why bother with save-for-web Phil :confused:l? You can do exactly the same things with the standard save-as! If you're after saving as srgb, then simply do a convert to profile first before you save-as! If you keep forgetting, then make the steps ino an action.

Phil - LR 4.2 has full 32 bit FP support giving you 20 stops of exposure latitude should you need it; having said that you do need to have the ability to create the 32 bit FP image in the first place.
CS5 will do it, but there's a process version mis-match - LR4 being PV2012 and CS5 being indirectly PV2010 due to its reliance on ACR 6 - so CS6 is the best way to go.
ACR 7.2 will not talk to CS5, so the only way to achieve a fully 2012 compliant workflow with full 32 bit FP support is to run LR4.2 + ACR 7.2 + CS6

To abandon the ability to use layers in any bit depth greater than 8 bit, the 32 bit FP support, and the ability to use PV2012 ACR smart objects is something I feel you need to carefully consider - the potential increases in image quality you'll be leaving behind are immense.

LR4.2 is not designed to be a stand-alone option; it can be used that way, and quite successfully come to that; but it has so much ACR 7.2/CS6 functionality built into it that not using it is potentially leaving image quality on the table; and not in your images where it's supposed to be.

Hi Andy I'm not getting CS6 in fact I don't need CS2 or light room it's just that I have gone to win 7 64x and bibble 4 and the plug in dose not work well on 64x. I have aftershot pro but I hate the lay out and find it hard to work with, I may just go back to Nikons capture NX2 which I have.

Phil. Save for Web is actually a plugin although part of the program. I once had trouble with PS crashing when I wanted save for web. Check your preferences and make sure Photoshop can only use 60% or so of availbale resources, becasue if it uses too much it has none left ot load SFW and crashes!

PhilH is right. Go with LR4. You could ask adobe direct about a CS6 upgrade if you ever fancy it. I got mine for £90

Apologies for been away a long time but i am currently undergoing a significnt lifestyle change from full time employment into self employment... I don't have much spare time at present, not that I had much time previosuly doing a 4 hour commute either......

Phil - Depends on how much edting you do, I have been using Elements v10 for a few months now and there are just some things that I return back to my old CS2 for.

Its not just the bit depth issue, Elements is a cut down CS and is missig some vital editing things that are used quite a bit in full CS - things like accessing Channels to make mask layers or tweak B&W images, ability to convert image to LAB mode, a reduced number of editing modes - you are pretty well restricted restricted to Clone Stamp and Spot heal modes only, restricted curves adjsuted commands without cheating and using a layer mask mode.

In their place are a number of "guide through" processes which are meant to pamper to the less skilled and replace full control editing, things like perspective control etc but you have fixed control sliders rather than full editing tools.

For simple editing and colour tuning its not an issue, if you are delving into more creative editing requiring masks and channel control etc its not a solution, shame there is no in between house, £600 odd for full CS vs £80 for Elements.....
