Seeing Stewarts ISO650 squirrel thought I would post this image, not intending it to be an ISO war
Taken whilst sheltering in a hide from the downpours on Saturday, I saw this Reed Bunting using the same perch some way off (was all I saw), unable to get a reasonable image I decided to throw caution to the wind and stacked the 1.4 and 2x for a FL of 1120mm and upped the ISO to 1600, not expecting to get anything that would be even half decent even for presentation on the web,
I was to say the least very surprised at the results..... not good enough for print or submission but reasonable for web presentation..
This looks very pleasing to me Phil - I've become quite a fan of soft light.
I find the key thing with high iso is getting the exposure spot on. When the light or weather is poor one can always learn something new by experimenting. I find my stacked pics make great record shots I was just saying to Tim this morning that I must try two x2!
Another five years camera development and ISO 1600 may be the bog standard ISO
A very attractive image despite the ISO1600 (which doesn't really show up in a websized image) and still looks reasonably sharp which is amazing considering you have stacked the 1.4x TC and 2.0x TC. I guess the sharpness is probably lost a bit when viewed at 100%.
I reckon a bit of NeatImage on the background, a bit of extra USM on the bird, and you would have a file that printed very nicely at least to A4 if not bigger.
Great composition and looks really good for 1600iso. A very tiny nit for me are the white streaks - one to the right and one to the right and slightly above - which draw my eye - but overall its an image I'd be very happy to achieve.
LOL its rain Dennis..... with the slowish shutter speed the streaks are quite long, I do have some where it looks clearly like rain, I didn't spend too long on this image as I really didn't have any intention of using it for anything else than web presentation and demonstrating what is possible when pushing the limits
Thanks all for your comments, I might spend some time on these images to see if I can get something useable.

I am amazed at the quality you have achieved using 'stacked extenders' at iso 1600 I think the image says a lot about your all round skills!
