D7000 300mm f4 ISO 400 1/200s at f9 handheld
Another otter image from my close encounter. I have cropped this a bit tighther because I did not have enough room at the bottom for the otters virtual legs in the water and I would be interested to know what you think of the comp.
Many thnaks for the comments and advice on my Dunnock image. I use Capture NX2 only so using colour control points I selectively dropped the saturation to the greens and boosted the contrast a little on the bird plus cropped some off the log as suggested. A few slight tweaks but it makes all the difference as the Bishop said to the actress!

Another cracking D7000 shot Nick I reckon its the best one they've brought out yet. I,ve seen shots from them not sharp but when they are -they really are ! Love the little water droplets hanging on the wiskers on this one
Great stuff

Thanks JR, the 16 MP certainly produces the detail but I put it down to the 300mm f4, it is a tack sharp lens and for the money has to be the best bang for the bucks. Just wish Nikon would put VR on it.

I got the Nikor vr 70-300 f4.5 at a reasonable price, and it does me. I think the blue tit shows what it can do. I dare'nt put any sharpening on the camera !!

My D7000 works well for me with my 300ml 2.8 a great combo IMHO.

Cracking Nick. You seem to be doing okay with the lens though!

What some don't realise is that a 2.8 lens is ok but with close up bird stuff, it's the depth of field you need- 2.8 on a sparrow at 5 foot with a 300 mm is useless- so you are going to be at f 8 at least- so why throw away a few grand ? Beats me

That's a beauty - what happened after it heard the shutter ?

My wife took one glance at this and said "Ooh, that's nice."
I agree.

Cracking shot, those whiskers are great! Such a lot of detail, I think the comp works well. Must have been amazing to have such a close encounter, I'd have been too gob-smacked to press the shutter!

Many thanks for all your comments folks, glad you like the comp.
Graham......the otter was not bothered at all by the shutter noise in fact it was that that made it curious I think and why it ended up literally almost in my lap!
Phil......next time you are up this way let me know, I am sure I can get you connected with an otter.
Nick.
