digital signature?

I currently offer prints on FineArtAmerica.com and just had my first sale on there. However, none of the prints can be hand signed because the print does not come to me, it goes direct to the buyer. Would it be unusual to sign the image digitally using my actual signature from the use of a tablet in PS? (wacom tablet with pen). I'd like all of my images to have some sort of signature whether they are by hand or not, but just curious if this is a common practice. I don't sell limited edition prints (yet at least), so I can't see this negatively affecting image sales. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Speaking from a "practical" angle rather than artistic, we've learned to cherish signatures on prints from our studio. Ethical labs, even Walmart, will refuse to copy photos with signatures without a release from the photographer, and that's priceless when you're in the business of selling. You'll be amazed how many clients try to have extras printed to "share" with friends and family, even put them on t-shirts.

Absolutely, go for it!

Hank is right on, here. Portrait photographers have done this for years...it will not stop copying completely, but, it will stop a lot of it...especially at Costco, Walmart, Walgeen, etc...early suits filed by PPA taught this lesson to them early.

Thanks Joe- I forgot to give PPA due credit for this.

Hey Peter- You'd be amazed how often we get calls from our local Walmart asking if we have given permission to someone to copy our photos. On the rare occasion when we allow it (most typically for obit photos on short timelines), Walmart asks us to come in and sign a written release. They have forms for it. As Joe sezz, it won't stop all unauthorized copying, but it catches the biggest share.
