Hi Phil
The quality of the video in hi def is excellent. The problem is having to use the screen on the back which is a pain in daylight,
You really need to use a tripod for any serious work and VR on a lens is a great help. There is an input for an external mike..
I find the auto focus not easy in video mode- tends to hunt a lot.. As Ken Rockwell says in his review- if you want to do serious video- get a video camera- they are cheap enough these days.
Cheers
JR
Sorry- forgot to mention- you really need AF.S lenses.

Hi Phil

I shoot a lot of video with the Canon 5dmk2 & 1dmk4. I dont know about the Nikon but I shoot using 1/50th. In good light you can be shooting at up to f32 which gives you amazing DOF on video. This is very helpful as AF is slow and manual focus takes a lot of practice when shooting in live view. I do have a hoodman loupe which helps to se the screen and I use a Rodeo Videomic to gather up the sound as the built in mike picks up to much camera noise. I often go to the video in Africa at night and when the light is very poor and have got some really acceptable stuff at ISO 6400. Apple's imovie is great for basic video editing

I also shoot a lot of video with my 7D. Pulling focus manually is a learning curve, but you can get fantastic results. You could buy a video camera, but you'd not get shallow DoF without spending a huge mound of dosh. Once you get the hang of manual focus the results are stunning and well worth the effort. I use a Tascam DR-40 to record audio, with a short headphone type connector lead between the headphone out of the Tascam and the mic input on the 7D. Makes it easier to sync the audio in post later.
