UPDATE: 11/27, 3:30pm MST
I called Nik and found out the scoop: all USA customers are already scheduled to have account info moved over to Google, so there's nothing we have to do if we're OK with the data transfer. If you want no part of it, you DO have to use that "Opt-Out" email option. So the original email from Nik still stands.

The Nik webpage that says you have to transfer by 12/7 is only for international customers. Somehow Photoshop guru Rich Harrington came across that Nik webpage and popped out a Photofocus blogpost about it, but the info isn't actually accurate. They always keep comments closed on that blog, so nobody has been able to correct the issue, that the trabsfer thing is only for non-USA customers.

No biggie that it was incorrectly posted on Photofocus, things happen even with the famous guys. I probably should have researched it before posting it on NPN and getting us all confused.:argue: :argue: :argue:

Anyway, mystery solved!

Initial post:
If you own any Nik products and want to continue to have upgrade eligibility, you have to transfer your registration by December 7th to Google now that they own it (Boo Hiss). Here's the link (I'll keep the URL visible but clickable):

I'm trying to look at this sale of Nik to Google as half full and not half empty but I think I have a crack in the bottom of my glass... :argue:

Thanks, Paul. I have several Nik products but did not receive any notification about this (i.e. about the need to transfer registration). Good to know.

Thank you Paul. Like you, I'm hoping for the best. I've got a few of their products I consistently use when processing images.

Thanks Paul.

I did get an email on November 1. I didn't do anything because the email simply stated that they were transferring the records to Google and only if I didn't want them transferred did they provide a link to opt out. Here is the letter below

As you may have heard, Nik Software was recently acquired by Google Inc. We are very excited about the future and continuing to deliver amazing photographic editing tools and technologies to photographers.

Our number one commitment has always been to you, our valued customers. During this transition we want to provide you with the same level of service that we have offered in the past. In order to continue to be eligible for support, we have to transfer your customer records (for example, registration and purchase information) from Nik to our new offices at Google. The transfer will happen on December 1st and once your data has been moved to Google, it will be subject to the Google Privacy Policy.

By transferring your customer information, you may receive information regarding Nik and Google products, depending if you had opted into receiving that type of information in the past from Nik Software. You will be able to change your communication preferences at any time by sending us an email through our contact page.

If you do not want your data to be transferred, please send us an email by clicking here. If this link doesn't work, please send an email to TransferOptOut@niksoftware.com and list any email addresses that you would like to prevent from being transferred. Please note, only customers that transfer their customer information to Google will be eligible for support for their Nik Software products.

If you have any questions, please contact us through www.niksoftware.com/contact.

Thank you for your support, we look forward to continuing to providing you new and amazing photographic tools.

Best regards,

The Nik Software Team

Tom, that's exactly what I remember, that you DIDN'T have to do anything. And then a reminder from an RSS feed for Richard Harrington today stated you have to DO the transfer or lose it, so I'm as confused as the rest. The fact that Nik has that webpage may mean that they had to switch gears because of public outcry/riots/pestilence and other demonstrative ditties, lol.

I'm changing my Nik login/email to one of my Gmail accounts and THEN submitting it to Google. That way they don't have my personal account on file. I had to submit a request to Nik, they don't give you that option on their site (that I can find), and Username Change is one of the Support categories they offer.

Is there any concern that this might be a scam?? Phishing type of stuff?? Just curious. If I don't receive an email from NIK saying that I need to do this...I'm reluctant to jump on that web site and do it voluntarily. But at the same time...I don't want to lose my registration info....Hmmm...what to do....

On the NIK website-when it first opens-is a link "Click here to learn how this affects you". That link takes you to the page that looks like the one in Tom's post above. I could not find anything on the site that looks like what Paul received in the email. I'm with Kate thinking this may be a scam of some sort. Paul when you scroll your mouse over the links in the email, does it actually reference the Nike site? If someone finds out for sure this is legit, please respond. Thanks!

Hi Dottie,

It wasn't an email, it was this post on Scott Bourne's Photofocus site: http://photofocus.com/2012/11/24/are-you-a-nik-customer-might-want-to-transfer-your-registration-info/. Maybe the author was wrong, because I did originally get a "you don't need to do anything" email.

I'll write Nik and ask 'em what the real story is.
