Shadow Dance
Went for a stroll in the Bisti last Sunday to enjoy the gorgeous 65° day. I brought along a camera just in case, although I had no intention of making any good images during the middle of a bluebird day. But the low November sun provided some interesting shadows out there in this particular grouping of hoodoos.
So, this image could well be titled 'Just in Case'.

John, I've seen some places labeled, "Table Rock," but none nearly so appropriate as this one. About how tall is that hoodoo?

He's about two feet tall, Howard.

John, have you ever tried an IR camera in that kind of light?

Wow, was I fooled by the scale of this hoodoo. I was thinking 10 or 12' tall. I like the conversion and the use of the shadow in the comp. This is a great reminder to all of us to remember shadows in our images. I like it.

The other shot is just a fun portrait.

Funny how we can be fooled by scale. I would have guessed same as Morris. Recently I had a prospective customer who was totally unfamiliar with Arches NP ask me about the size of the opening in North Window looking back to Turrent Arch. He said " if a man were standing in that opening how tall would he appear in the print. I showed him and he was incredulus. He thought the opening was probably twelve feet high. When he grasp the scale he bought the print.

Thanks!

I used to have a p&s camera rigged to shoot IR, but I sold it. I did use a faux IR filter which comes pretty close, but it didn't make any difference at all with this particular image and the almost monochromatic environment.

Dang, had me fooled. Small scale can yield great images as well. Precisely why I appreciate shots like this and other close-up/macro shots. These types of funky structures really do lend themselves to b&w for sure. Where is this area, John?

It's located about a half mile before the Cracked Eggs site in the Bisti Wilderness, Ken.

Cool shot John, I like all the texture in the image. I did the same thing a few weeks ago out at North Coyote Buttes, went in the middle of the day and just shot some detail shots of the sandstone. Always pays to have a camera with you!
