I will try this shot as an excerise in smugmug gallery posting. Hopefully it works. Was rather underexposed without flash, did my best Andy...honest
So all in all just a test of the link really.

Hi Niel
Certainly an interesting shot . For some reason the image seems a little "harsh" for want of a better word- more evident in the biggie. Maybe just a drop in contrast might help.
I am sure others will have much more complex solutions

Agrre with JR Neil. Also I would have gone for a landscape format to capitalise on the mushroom. Just my thoughts.
Hi Neil, viewing on the MacBook Pro so not ideal, however I do find the image rather saturated and certainly, the BKG is very 'punchy'! Not a great lover of the highlight behind the head may wish to tone things down, plus the WP looks quite precariously balanced, agree on the landscape format, may have offered a better balance all round. The subject for me, looks pushed and hammered on the blacks/shadows. Why -1 comp, looks like light was not on your side 1/320 at ISO800?
Sorry to sound so negative on this one.
BTW I do find the roaming stag TM a little distracting how about Opacity/Fill adjustment?

Hi Neil, The GSW is smart for me but I find the BG and mushroom is overpowering it a little

Neil that bg reallly dramatic can't make up my mind! the bird itself looks good to me.

So we all agree with what I thought then I was not under any camo at the time and to avoid spooking the WP I did not use flash, which meant the BG had to be catered for, -1 was just keeping the BG from blowing. It was a long shot and I only stuck it up as I have no more toadstool shots with a woodpecker. A shame but there you go. Maybe next autumn.
[i]And my link worked! ;)[i/]- OP is a bit of a Postage stamp though

Smugmug gives me postage stamp or too big for this forum, one of my main beefs. Let us post 1000px shots as standard and we wont have to upload a big one and take up server space!
