Per my previous post...
This image was taken near a slot canyon south of Hanksville.

Wow, those are both very impressive! It seems you have your technique very refined, as the light looks naturally soft. This one here is especially mysterious... something strange is going to come out of that slot! Really nice work.

Paul, I don't even know how to critique light painting but it sure is nice to not have to worry about trying: what a fantastic image. This one is packed full of emotion. Very creative too!

This is my favorite of the two, great color in the slot and very nice work on the subtle highlighting on the surface.

As you alluded to in your previous shot, it's not my thing. But that's some great work. The only thing I can say here is that I might try to get colors either more similar or more different than that inside and outside the slot. Or were they the same light? I just see them as close, but not the same. Perhaps the red inside the slot paired with some blue-ish LED's instead? Just a thought.

Extremely creative light painting! The almost volcanic glow in the slot is masterful, and just as nice is the selective lighting used around it to help draw the eye into the crevice. Mysterious indeed, and very, very impressive work. I'd love to hear how this was done if you see fit.

I suppose all photographers create their "art" in different ways. I certainly can see a niche for these kinds of images. The glow and softness of the images is very appealing to me. Quite creative and unique. Outstanding work :toast:

I absolutely love this one Paul, the shadows you created on the surface show the texture so well, I like the color on the surface myself, maybe just a hint more blue would be even better. The light in the slot is just superb, would be cool if it went the length of the canyon, but I'm sure that would pose a difficult challenge. I'm a fan of light painting (just went to Dave Black's workshop this past weekend) so maybe I'm a bit biased  keep it up!

Incredible image! Your choice of subject and light color was spot on!

Thanks for the comments everyone.
John and Mark - I used a small LED video light and skimmed the light across the ground off to camera left and right for the foreground. For the slot, I used the same light on a painter's pole so I could reach in. I initially tried to light the slot with a red LED light, but it died right after turning it on :frown: Mark, I do like your idea about blue lights. I'll try that sometime.
David - I initially thought about lighting more of the canyon, but the back part was larger than it looks in the image. In hindsight, I wish I had taken the time to paint that area. BTW, Dave Black was one of the first photographers who inspired me to try light painting. Where was the workshop held? I'd love to attend one. If you like light painting, check out Harold Ross and Eric Curry.

Same here, he's been an inspiration for a long time. It was in Denver, pretty good but nothing that you couldn't learn from his website. I did come away inspired to get out there and do more though, I've got the itch and have several new lights to test out  I'll be sure to check out Harold and Eric, thanks!

The colors certainly give it an underworld god feel. I like the light across the surface, but maybe wish for more redlight along the length of the slot and a darker spot of sky.
