Drop Down Thumbnails
I have had this problem off and on for several months.

My thumbnails don't render on drop down menus when attempting to upload to the internet or if I open folders on the desktop with Apple's software. No problem when in proprietary software such as View NX from Nikon, Photoshop/Bridge or Photomechanic.

See image of desktop. The two photos that you see rendered were done/redone more recently. The thumbnails that did not render are from 2011, but done with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, but were all originally processed in Abobe ACR. Sometimes I can see images from earlier in 2011 or the years before, so the problem isn't just "old software". The problem is very widespread, but somewhat random.

As one might guess--Apple says it's Abobe's fault and well....Adobe rarely addresses anything that you call them about. You bought it, you broke it is their attitude.

I've physically taken my computer to Apply twice. Also, I have the same problem on my laptop. And, I transferred images to an external hard drive and plugged it into another computer at Apple and we couldn't see them there either, so it appears to be something in the images and not on the computer itself.

Did I mention that I had this problem in about March 2012, then it just went away one day, but returned in late August. I suggested to Apple that maybe something came through an update that screwed everything up, then perhaps another update fixed it and another-so on, but either the engineers didn't think so or they just never bothered to address the issue because I never heard from them.

I've cleared caches and a variety of things. Can anyone help? I have been quite preoccupied with processing and computer issues recently. My iMac was in the recall for defective hard drives and I was hoping that was going to fix it when the hard drive was replaced, but the problem came home again with me.

I've seen very few posts on online forums for this issue and no answers.

I feel your pain on this and went through something similar a while back. Like you I use Nikon cameras, Macs, and Adobe Photoshop.

I import my raw files from the compact flash card via Nikon Transfer. Nikon Transfer used to generate a thumbnail for every raw file on import, but then an update to Nikon Transfer no longer created thumbnails. I complained to Nikon and was told they knew about it but have never fixed it. I solved that problem with a free app that would create the thumbnail for me, but that doesn't work beyond OS X 10.5. I now generate thumbnails for my NEFs with Graphic Converter.

I see that your problem is with jpegs which I assume you are creating when you save from within Photoshop. So the problem is likely an Adobe issue. Have you upgraded that recently? Changed a preference setting somewhere? Are you using Save or Save for Web? Save for Web may be stripping out the preview/thumbnail.
