IE 8 or 9

Are people having trouble with the IE updates?
I'm always hesitant to upgrade to "newer and better" when my experiences have been more like "far worse and totally unworkable"
The horror of Vista on a new computer taught me this, and I had to pay more to revert to XP.

Any bugs or problems with IE 8 or 9? What are the supposed advantages?

I've had CS6 sitting here in the box for 2 months, and have not gotten up the courage to download it, as I have so little time to learn all the new things.

Sandy,

Are you currently using XP? I so, then IE8 is the latest version you can use with that OS; XP doesn't support IE9.

If you are using Win 7, then by all means upgrade to IE9. It much more stable, and imho, easier to use. I have IE8 on one computer (with XP) and IE9 on my main machine with Win 7. Updates have always been error-free.

You could also try Chrome or Firefox as your browser. I think Firefox does a better job rendering color than does IE. I don't have Chrome on this computer, but use it on my old one, and it is a nice browser, too.

While I am at it...If your computer meets the minimum specs for Win 7 -SP1, you should seriously consider upgrading. Win 7 is superior to XP. There is a ton of info as to how to do this at Microsoft's web site.

I recently upgraded from CS5 to CS6 ( am using the 64-bit version). For the most part, CS6 is very similar to CS5 and the new tools in CS6 are easy to learn and use. The Patch tool and 'background save' are worth the price of admission. The new Crop tool takes some getting used to, but you can use the 'classic' crop tool, if you want to. CS6 is a good bet, and it won't take you very long to get up to speed.

Thanks, Preston - yes, I am using XP.
I thought people here were having a lot of trouble with Chrome?
I'll be brave (after Christmas) and install CS6 and IE8...maybe...

Sandy, I agree with Preston on using Firefox. I'm on Win 7 and have used Firefox for more then just a few years now including on my older XP unit. Still have that box and upgrade Firefox as needed there too. I will say IE9 seems to work just fine on Win 7 and upgrades have not been any issue for me to date.

I would not recommend avoiding updating your ie browser regardless if you use it our not. Most updates are centered around security enhancements and not keeping software up to date will obviously increase chances of security issues. This holds true for XP as well, the older the OS the more security holes it has in it.

I think Firefox does a better job rendering color than does IE.
Firefox supports full color management. The last I heard, IE only supported very limited color management but I don't know about IE8 or 9.

Safari is another option for alternative web browsers. It also supports full color management.

Sandy, I've used Firefox as my main browser on both Mac and PC's for most of a decade with no problems. I highly recommend using it rather than IE in any flavor.

IMO the browser upgrade is less hassle than dealing with all the errors caused by browsing sites that are utilizing the upgraded features and don't work on older browser versions. I've been on Win7 for about three years and agree it is as stable as XP with the bonus of being able to stay up to date on IE versions. The only issue I've had with Win7 has been associated with Adobe Flash. I had to switch it to manual upgrade mode because every time flash updated itself it stopped working and I had to uninstall and reinstall the lastest rev. At least in manual I can go through that exercise less frequently and at a time that I feel like dealing with it
