Thinking like Jack B, I posted a look back at 2012 on my blog. I'm a project photographer, so rather than a best of, it's more about images made on a continuum of numerous projects. Besides, I don't have Jack's discipline to narrow it down to a dozen...

A real nice set of wildlife and landscape images from the past year. Snowdunes grabs me most.

Interesting collection, Dave! I'm with Jack on the Wetterhorn shot--also really like the Bison!

Agreed, love the Wetterhorn shot. That's not a perspective you see very often and the evening light and moon make the image very moody. I also love the moose images, and the running Bison. In all a very beautiful set Dave.
Wetterhorn,Snow dunes, Capitol from Snowmass, the three bears, the bison, a classic Marcellina shot.... great collection Dave!

A highly productive year with a diverse and accomplished group. Enjoyed your travelogue.

A very interesting and varied collection here. I like each and every one for many different reasons.
But the one that resonates with me and says a lot is the image of the Gunnison Sage grouse mating dance with the cattle in the background. Not only a relatively rare image in its own right, but one that speaks of partnership rather than antagonism in order to preserve biodiversity in the Intermountain West. Thanks for all of your efforts.

A wonderful collection, Dave. It really showcases your talent with wildlife. My favorites are the prairie dog & the Marcellina sunset. Congrats on a great year and hope 2013 is even more productive for you.
Thanks for your thoughtful comments. The Gunnison sage-grouse shot is a bit ironic, because I have so many other images in my mind's eye, but I keep coming back to this one for the conservation story. The bird will be listed as an endangered species soon - it's the 4th most endangered bird in N. America and 3,000- 3,500 remain in the wild. The running bears came about unexpectedly. I was watching the bears in near total darkness and made a few images at ISO 6400. When they started running, I quickly turned the ISO dial to get a slower shutter speed for a pan shot. This is the only image that worked from that event and I like it a lot. The next day a boar showed up, probably why mama bear ran to protect her two year old cubs. The day after that, we watched the boar mate with a blond female across the valley.

What a mix of elegance, action and story-telling in these photos Dave! The grouse image is a great illustration of how people can work together to protect the species. I also like the "looking right at you" view of the moose in the willows, east side RMNP.
