Ok, now we are moving on to Chapter 4 - Light.

In addition to reading Chapter 4 very carefully, I want to reiterate the three most important aspects to what makes light important and how it ultimately affects the aesthetic value of your image:

1) Intensity
2) Color
3) Direction

Understanding this is all you really need to know about the qualities of natural light. Of course, we are going to get much deeper than that, but these are the key points.

If you want to go ahead and read the entire chapter now, go ahead. The assignment will be due on Thursday

The first image I would like to see you post an example of is that with soft, diffused light. This is a function of light Intensity. Since harsh, midday light is usually considered bad form, I won't ask for example. Soft, diffused light, on the other hand, is very desirable for certain types of images.

And since we have already posted examples of cool and warm light when we discussed White Balance, I wont ask for examples again. You should, however, have a handle on this aspect of light by now.

The second part of the assignment deals with light Direction. Front, side, and backlighting are all discussed and described in the book. You can post examples of all three or just any of the above - whichever you happen to have. In addition, I would like for you describe how it affects the scene or subject. You can find description of each on page 104 of the Ultimate Guide.

If you need more time to make - or find - these images, just let me know.

As always, I am here to answer any questions you might have. Happy new Year!

Richard
