Not sure if this is the right forum, but I haven't found any other info and it is technically photo gear. Anyways, I am trying to transfer folders to an external hardrive, but keep getting this message "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient permissions". I can't seem to find any info on the web either, I checked to make sure the folders were not locked and I can't seem to find a way around it. If anybody has any idea how to fix this issue I would greatly appreciated. I am currently using the CS3 version along with PS CS3.

Peter - Can you copy anything to the external drive, even outside of Bridge? If not, then the problem is the permissions, or file structure, on the external drive. If that's not a problem, then maybe giving detailed steps of what you're doing would help.

It doesn't look like I can copy any file to any external hard drive, however I can drag files from the hard drives onto my Mac. All I am simply trying to do is right click the folder and copy it to the external hard drive to make space on my Mac. Even if I try dragging the folders to the hard drive it gives me the "Do not enter" symbol.

It sounds like your Mac can only read the drive, not write to it. That would happen if the drive was Windows formatted.

Do you know what file system the drive is formatted with?
Have you used it before, or is it new out of the box?
Have you ever used it with a Windows computer?
Are there things currently on the drive that you don't want to lose?

The first drive was I believe formatted for Windows, which would make sense now if I cannot get folders from my Mac on there. However, I got a new drive that I hooked up out of the box to my Mac yet I am having the same issue. My older drive has some pretty important folders on it that I don't want to lose, but the new drive should be clean with nothing on it since I can't transfer anything over there.

New drives are generally Windows formatted, even if they're for both Windows and Mac. If you want to use the new drive on both Windows and Mac, you should format it as exFAT, which can be used on both. If you want to format it just for your Mac, you could do that as well (that's HPS+ format).

Thanks for the help, just formatted to Mac and everything works great!
