I was surprised to see a Carolina wren at the local nature center. I did not realize they could over winter in central Illinois. Even more surprised when the wren jumped into a water dish and took a bath! Decided to post it here due to the water dish. Wondering if anyone else sees wrens in the winter.

When I lived in NJ we thought of Carolina Wren as "half hardy:" a species that usually withdrew in winter but that sometimes stayed put even through the harshest months of winter.
Interesting that you posted this, Richard. Birders in NJ have recently reported seeing many more Wrens this winter than is the norm. Wonder if it's a widespread phenomenon?
According to reports here in Quebec, it depends on the severity of winter. Some years, individuals stay almost all winter. Winter before last was quite mild and very little snow fell and there were many sightings of these tough little fellows. Not surprising that they would linger in NJ.
