My parents will be touring and birding Eastern Texas next month, so I thought I would join them for a few days. Any favorite spots to bird, along the Eastern coast or anywhere in the Eastern part of the State, as far South as Corpus Christi? I've never been to Texas, and am very much looking forward to the trip, and seeing / photographing some new birds.

If you get to Corpus Christi go to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge that is the winter home of Whopping Cranes. Take one of the boat trips. They take you up the intercoastal water way. We were within 25 to 30 yards from several cranes, plus several other birds. I had 5 or 6 lifers on the trip including a flamingo. There are also several other great spots around the area to bird. It is to bad if you are that close if you do not get down to the Rio Grande Valley. World class birding there, people come from all over the world to bird the area. You will see birds there that you will not see in any where else in North America. Some spots there are Laguna Atascosa national wildlife refuge, Santa Ana national wildlife refuge, Rio Grande Bentsen state park, South Padre Island, and Sabal Palm Audubon Center. If you Google any of these sites your can get all kinds of information. Have a great trip, there is great birding all along the Texas coast.

Google "Texas Birding Trail." Or if you have time, order A Birder's Guide to Texas from ABA.

The Rockport/Fulton County Park is an excellent spot to photograph waterbirds, often carcaras as well. Taking a boat trip is the best way to see and photograph Whooping Cranes. There are several operators, Kevin Sims is one who does a great job. Closer to Houston, Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge has a nice auto tour and can be very good, while Brazos Bend State Park is very good for walking and bird photography.
