Foggy Dunes!
I was watching the webcams Saturday and saw a snow squall ht the dunes late in the afternoon. I figured that might lead to some interesting conditions Sunday morn (was hoping for a light dusting on the dunes, unfortunately that quickly blew off!) So I got up at 4, and gripped the wheel over La Veta Pass which was icy and stuck in dense fog, got to the dunes just in time to get up to High Dune for sunrise. A fog bank along the Medano creek bed crept up the dunes just after sunrise, so I spent the next few hours shooting in the fog. The wind was vicious going up to High Dune, but as soon as the fog hit, it became totally calm. Fog is pretty common at Alamosa, but not the dunes, and while ive shot fog AT the dunes before this was the first time being up in the dunes IN the fog--it was quite an amazing experience!

Great set of photos under very unusual conditions Stan. thanks for sharing and also showing (reminding) us again what 'being there' means.

I really like the image posted above, Stan. I actually think it was a blessing that the snow dusting blew away. I don't think the image above would have the same impact if there had been some snow on the ground.

I've never seen anything like this at the GSD. Spectacular conditions and photo, and Larry nailed your mind-set as a landscape photographer. :toast:

Just fantastic atmospheric conditions, Stan. Glad you were able to be there to catch all of it. Excellent work in all of the images. I like #2 and the abstract with the lines. :toast:

"Odd colors and lines in the sand," "wide view of the foggy dunes," and "swirling fog creates dramatic light" are my favs from this batch. Looks like it was quite a day to be there!

Really like the collection of shots Stan. Too many to name one or two favorites for me. I like many of the layers and diagonal lines you have running throughout the comps

Stan, of this large set, #14 with the swirling fog patterns stood above the rest for me. The combination of golden light, blue shadows and patterns in the sand is enticing.
