For some reason I no longer receive email from this site when people post comments and such. Never had this problem before, I even changed to 3 different email accounts I have and checked all of my settings on my account here and my email settings and spam folder. This site is the only one that is effected and don't know why.
I have emailed the site admin and they have no answer.
Has anyone else had and resolved this type of problem?
Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you confirmed you are checking the box for email notification with every image that you post? It is easy to miss in the rush to upload an image.
Always check the box. Have reviewed my settings. Have talked with my service provider and they say that BL in the code for the error means that it is black listed at the NPN end. If you find a solution please let me know. Its been a long, long time since I've been able to get emails from this site.
Yes, I check the box and in my settings I have other forums checked to receive postings when they occur..I get nothing?

I don't understand.
Who is receiving an error message? Where is the error message coming from? Is there an error message generated each time you are supposed to receive an email notification from NPN? Why would the sender (i.e. NPN) send out an error message instead of the notification? Why would the sender black list a recipient and then send an email error message to that recipient?
I thought Blacklisting occurred at the receiving end of an email. Has your service provider blacklisted email from NPN? Do you receive an error message from your service provider that it has blocked incoming mail from NPN?

I also have everything checked properly and for a long time have not received emails.

Looking at the long headers/raw source on the latest email I've received from NPN shows that there is an authentication step via "Cloudmark Authority Engine" involved in outgoing mail from NPN. On my incoming message it is classified as "spf=neutral; sender-id=neutral" at this stage and then continues on its way to my incoming mail server.
Perhaps this is where outgoing messages to NPN recipients is getting blocked. \Does aAnybody here know anything about this authentication process and who can fix it from the NPN side of things?
Richard. It has been a very long time (over a year) since I've gotten an email from the photo critique comments. Originally I contacted Jim directly and he suggested I contact my provider. Later a member of NPN who had my personal email sent me the code she received when attempting to send one through NPN's process. This is the one that had the BL in the code. Try using the email icon under this message and see if the code comes up. Then email me at lightray@optonline.net and tell me the result.
Thanks. Any help is appreciated.

When sending to Patricia from the Email link at the bottom of her comment the NPN form loads correctly and I was able to fill out a message and launch it. NPN reports that the message was sent.
Shortly after that I received a failure message for that email and in the raw source it says:
----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<lightray@optonline.net>
(reason: 554 Your mail from 69.64.68.109 was rejected. There are too many DNSBL-listed hosts in the /24 network surrounding your host. Please contact ISP to rectify this.)

I also sent Pat an email via the email link at the bottom of the comments. NPN said the message was sent and I did not receive any errors.
Richard, when you said, ".... I received a failure message..." How did you receive the message? Did you get an email, or Did the NPN page toss out the error?
Curious now if Pat got my email.

I too have been having this problem for over 6 mos. without any luck in resolving it. If a solution is found, please let the larger group know so I can try to resolve. It is very frustrating.

The form page at NPN gave me two fields - subject and text. I filled those out and clicked on the Send button. The page changed to say something like :message sent. No error message appeared in Safari browser.
A minute or two after that I got an email message in my Apple Mail client from: Mail Delivery Subsystem <MAILER-DAEMON@flipper.webscope.com> This is where NPN is actually hosted as far as I can tell from the raw source of received messages. I'll hang onto the error message and forward it to anyone who wants to use it to debug whatever is going on. Just let me know who wants a copy.

Just a shot in the dark here... Pat, Peter and Richard, what browsers are you using? Richard mentioned Safari - are you all on Macs? I'm on a PC using Chrome and haven't had this problem. I get email from the NPN form as well as daily digests from the selections in my preferences.
Richard, I would send all the info you have directly to Jim at editor@naturephotographers.net . Another suggestion would be for anyone who's having this trouble try logging on from someone else's computer if possible and preferably someone on a different browser and possibly platform. Really weird, wish I had better ideas.

Members whose ISPs use Spam Cannibal's database for spam filtering will not receive email from NPN.

Lon:
This is not an OS or Browser issue. I get all the expected email from NPN - all comments on every image I post; email from NPN members who use the email link to reach me.
The problem is with one or more nodes in the email chain between the NPN host and some NPN members such as Patricia. I can create an email destined for Patricia from an NPN page that then gets intercepted and denied by one of the nodes in the routing tree on its ay to Patricia's incoming mail server. As Mark Stahlke's post indicates it is the NPN mail server identity that is getting flagged as a spam source.

Ok...totally confused, am I right in thinking there is no fix? I was doing fine until about 3 weeks ago..then nothing from NPN
Posted by Lon Overacker on January 30, 2013 at 11:08 PM
Richard, totally agree with you in light of Mark's investigative info. To me, this translates in to being a "receiving" (members email servers/ISP's issue and not sending problem (NPN server.) I'm in some Yahoo groups and randomly some times those posts end up in my Spam folder. I suspect that somewhere on the receiving end, the domain "naturephotographers.net" needs to be listed in the "exceptions" list, where ever that may be.
I'm wondering, as a test, can one of you who are experiencing the problem, change your email address to a gmail address? If changing your email address doesn't work (eliminates email servers) and likely points to your ISP - or internet provider (att, comcast, whatever)
Internet Explorer, Windows 7, Optimum/Cablevision, Google

I right in thinking there is no fix?
I don't see a way for an individual like David or Patricia to fix this, except for changing your internet service provider.
It might be possible for Jim Erhardt to fix this but it will require getting NPN (or the NPN host company) off of Black Lists around the web as indicated by Mark Stahlke's comment. If that is too difficult then Jim could move NPN to a completely different host that is not on any black list.

Jim,
As near as I can figure out, here is what's happening.
Spam Cannibal is blacklisting the entire 69.64.68.0/24 netblock (IP addresses from 69.64.68.0 through 69.64.68.255) because there are a dozen or so hosts in that netblock sending spam. npn.webscope.com (69.64.68.109) has a 'neutral' reputation and is not one of the hosts sending spam but gets blacklisted with all the rest anyway - guilt by association.
I presume Webscope is NPN's web hosting provider. If so, they are probably reselling Codero's web hosting services since Codero owns the IP addresses in question. Codero has a reseller program so there's nothing unusual about that.
Some solutions:
Contact NPN's web hosting provider (Webscope ?) to let them know NPN's mail server is part of a blacklisted netblock and request an IP address in a different netblock. If they can't give NPN a new non-blacklisted IP address, have them contact Codero about the blacklisting.
Alternatively, you could contact Codero directly. They may not be aware of the blacklisting.
Or you could do both.
Edit: You could also contact Spam Cannibal and request removal from their blacklist.
I hope that helps.
I'm not effected by the email issues but it would be nice to get it resolved.
I believe that NPN is located on a private server. If that's the case, I don't think there's anything Jim can do on that end. Also, based upon Mark's post, it appears that the blocking of NPN's IP address is happening down stream from NPN. Jim may be able to find out who is actually doing the blocking, and have them unblock NPNs IP address.

This has been an ongoing battle. We get NPN off the black lists and then eventually end up back on them. I had always assumed this is do to spammers spoofing our email addresses - which is ongoing and something we're powerless to stop.
Jim: I sincerely hope that this can be resolved. I am not the only one affected now and the number seems to be growing. Even if NPN was off the blacklist for a period of time I still did not receive comments. Surely some of our computer experts on this site could offer some advice.

An update from DTP;
Hi Jim,
The reason code says:
Mail rejected by Hotmail for policy reasons. Reasons for rejection may be
related to content with spam-like characteristics or IP/domain reputation.
If you are not an email/network admin please contact your Email/Internet
Service Provider for help.
I checked your ip's reputation, and it's coming up clean except for one
site: spamcannibal.org. I checked your IP there, and they referred me to
another ip which isn't related to you. I'm not sure if this is the problem,
but I sent them a message, and will let you know what they say
