Colorado Fall Colors input
I'm looking for some input as I add locations to the 2nd edition of Colorado Fall Colors eBook. This is Cottonwood Pass, a prime 2WD high mountain pass for aspen peeping and great vistas. My question is whether I should add it as a location to my book or not? While it's a pretty drive there's nothing along it that I find really striking. This is my favorite shot from the drive, looking back on the road up. What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that I LOVE riding Cottonwood Pass on my motorcycle. ;-)

Seriously though, I don't remember any major fall color hot spots. I likely would not include it.

The road to and above Cottonwood Lake has very nice aspens and lake views. This is a turn off from cottonwood pass a couple of miles up from Buena Vista. I think it is worth the side trip. It is 2WD to just above the lake and then becomes a 4WD road. On the back side of cottonwood pass are some really great columbines growing in the rocks during aspen season, as I recall. I like the vista on the Taylor Park side.

Plus one for Cottonwood Lake, Jason. Like Larry said, the drive up has aspen all along the road, and the west side of the lake has a campground with some excellent stands, some with great reds. Here's one from there this year.

Jason, what are your objectives for the ebook ? Do you want to limit it to only the top locations, or make it more inclusive ?
If the later, I would certainly include this.

By including Cottonwood Pass I mean the road up with its aspens and the pass itself. I scouted the location last year, including the drive up. The first edition of the book had many iconic spots and some lesser known ones, including scenic areas without icons, but each location visually spoke to me. This spot on other hand didn't speak to me much photographically, so I'm wondering how others felt that have been there or seen photos.

I have never been to Cottenwood Pass. It takes me a day and a half to get to Colorado from where I live so I always head to a really photo rich location when I go west. Cottenwood Pass would be one of those locations I would make only if I were on the way or coming back from one of these places

The scenes at the top looking north and west and on the west side of cottonwood pass are much more photogenic then the east view in my opinion. This is obviously alpine scenics and not typical fall pix, but beautiful non-the-less, IMHO.

My personal favorite side of the pass is the also the one near Buena Vista where more aspen trees are located. I find during years where color isn't great at some of the other "hotspots" in the Elk or San Juan Mountains, the Sawatch Range can be surprisingly good. Some nice views of the back of Mt. Princeton and of Mt. Yale at that part of the road. Though, the top of the pass is interesting too and can have some decent tundra color. Not one of the easiest fall locations to shoot, but worthy of inclusion on your list IMO.

Thanks for the feedback. Since my book is fairly inclusive I'll likely add the location. My opinion is it never hurts to have more options.
