I'm going to be travelling to Portland in mid-February. Anyone know of places to shoot birds in that area? I finally got a 500mm prime lens and haven't had a chance to point it at anything yet so am not picky regarding species. If they will sit still long enough or fly by close enough I'll take it. Is Sauvie Island NWR any good?

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

The Ridgefield NWR in Washington state isn't far away and has a very good auto tour route. Sauvie's is pretty good but you are photographing from public roads or walking and photographing, so Ridgefield is more photographer friendly and usually more productive.

If you have time to go a bit further north, you might consider trying to make it to Ocean Shores, WA to catch the snowy owls there... though being from Alaska, that may be old hat to you.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Ocean Shores is out because I'm pinned to Portland. Which is a bummer because I've never seen a snowy much less shot one. Ridgefield sounds promising. Looks like it's right across the river from Sauvie so likely the same fowl but easier access it sounds like. I've been alloted one AM and one PM shoot during the trip :frown:
