Somebody asked about tips for Iceland when he goes in March. I thought I'd post a few more things while I'm there & before I forget: for getting gas, if you don't buy a gas card, you can use a credit card if you have your PIN. If you have a smart phone, there is 3G almost everywhere, which you'll want in order to monitor the weather, so make sure you have international coverage. And lastly, if ice caves are on your agenda: most guides stop taking clients to ice caves at the end of March because they're too unstable/dangerous. We used Einar from localguide.is, but he's already booked through April. Use a guide if you go to the ice caves -- they know which ones are safe (a Spanish guide was killed recently when he went in to check it out, leaving his clients outside & it collapsed on him) and will supply you with helmets & crampons. Many of them are accessed through private property.

That was (is) me. Thanks for the additional info. I've read online that WiFi is available in a lot of gas stations, has that been your experience? My phone would work in Iceland, but Verizon charges $1.29 a minute to the states. I'm planning on using WiFi and Google Voice and make calls that way for $0.01/min instead. Thanks again!

Joshua, I just asked about wi-fi in gas stations. The trip leader says wi-fi is available in the N1 gas stations. They're the biggest chain, so it should be no problem.
