Woodcock family
Final shot of the Woodie family.

A little bit about Woodcock family life - Like a lot of Wader chicks, Woodcock chicks are Precocial ie they hatch semi-independant, fluffy and ready to run (they can't fly yet) - similar to ducklings or chickens. Also, like chickens, the parents don't feed the youngsters - they have to find their own food. The parents only provide shepherding and protective duties - as Mum was doing in this case. I would guess that Mum would part company with the chicks after another week or two.

Hi Nick
a nice family shot. Are you photographing from a hide or are you just creeping up?

No Hide John, just taking the time to get close - Woodie's have a great belief in their camouflage and will usually sit tight until you virtually stand on them - at which point they give you a heart attack by exploding out from between your feet, as I'm sure John McT will attest! The difficult part is actually spotting one to start with.

You've saved the best 'til last

I cheat when taking woodcock shots.....I use a friend's pointer, but have yet to find any chicks in years of trying.

I'm going a shade of green here

Hello Nick
These shots are as rare as rocking horse droppings. Very well seen and captured indeed.
Best wishes
