I think i remember a not too distant conversation here about external hard drives and which was the best. Anybody have that link? I'm in the market. Feel free to private message me if you prefer.

Thanks! Wish I could join you all for the shindig this weekend, but be sure to post pix! :wavey:

I just purchased a 12TB external G-Speed Q. My purchase was based on reviews by professional photographers and video editing studios. It is a RAID 0,5. It is expensive but from the reviews i learned that it is very reliable. I used for years now Western Digital external HD with different capacities, and most of them worked very good, and they have excellent customer service. It depends on your capacity requirements and budget.

I switched to Western Digital several years ago, now own six, and have had no problems. I'd avoid Lacie, as all four I owned failed.

Not sure of any recent posts on this but here's an old one http://www.naturephotographers.net/imagecritique/bbs.cgi?a=vm&mr=35832&CGISESSID=4bc94ab809a7af39291d1ec17671582f&u=3994

Ditto on Western Digital, they really turned it around several years ago. I have 5 internal WD mechanical hard drives in my PC (two in RAID). I put two in the PC I built for my wife, and between my rig, my wife's and my PC at work. I also own 7 external WD drives. I also gave a friend a WD Velociraptor and two WD Caviar blacks, and in this entire pile of WDs I've had zero issues. Oh, I had a WD in the laptop too until last week when I popped an SSD in there, lol. So if you're going for a standard plug-it-in external, here's a good model to look at. If you DO have a huge budget then Raied's solution is obviously the best. Otherwise, these external WDs are pretty good, and if anything horrible should ever arise such as a house fire, you just grab that puppy and run and everything is saved. I like simple externals, I use two for photos just to be sure, they sure are cheap enough.

I'm using two Seagate 2TB flex drives with USB 3.0. They've been trouble free and USB 3.0 is incredibly fast.

I have 4 Seagate external drives from 500-2TB and they have been trouble free. They have become cheap enough that I would certainly recommend backing up your best work on an additional drive.

I have 4 IOMEGA drives, 3 usb and 1 NAS... have not had any issues. They are not the speediest, but they are reliable.

I've used Western Digital also. They had a 3TB drive on sale for under a $100 on I think Tiger Direct. Not sure if the sale is still going on, but great deal.

Having worked retail for many years I can tell you drive failures are pretty even across the brands. That being said I use an Iomega firewire drive for my images and a La Cie firewire drive to back up my computer.
