Where: Moab, of course
When: May 18, 2013
Who: All y'all!

Now that we've settled on a date I think we should start getting this sucker planned.

I need to get an idea of how many people are planning to attend and whether or not you are interested in a group campout on Friday, May 17. If so, we'll probably use the group campsite at Dead Horse Point or perhaps one of them along the River Road.

I realize this is still a few months out but I need to get a rough estimate of attendance. Please RSVP (tentative) by leaving a response below AND whether or not you'd do the group campout.

I've got feelers out to a few people who might be interested in doing a presentation for the group. If you've got something you'd like to present please email me directly with your proposal. Just like last year my gallery is available to the group on Saturday.

We'll work out an itinerary at a later date. But, count on sunrise and sunset on Saturday, possibly sunset on Friday and a group picnic at the park Saturday mid-day. I'm leading a workshop on Sunday, May 19 and won't be available for a group shoot.

I think that about covers it for now. Looking forward to seeing some old friends and hopefully making some new ones. Questions? Feel free to leave them here or email me directly.

I'm in!!! (Group camping or otherwise...I'm in)
Posted by Peter Coskun on February 11, 2013 at 8:56 PM
I'm definitely interested if I can get that weekend off for all of the events mentioned. Been dying to get back up there.
Posted by Bret Edge on February 11, 2013 at 9:00 PM
Pete M: Sah-weet! Are you sure you won't be tired of me after hangin' out together for a few days in April? ;-)

Peter C: I really hope you can make it. I'd enjoy meeting you and I know you'd have a great time. It's been such a blast the last couple of years.

I wish I lived about 1000 miles closer. :frown:

I'm in! Group camping sounds good. Gotta figure out what kind of animal flesh I'm gonna char for the picnic on Saturday. Anyone got an extra Armadillo? Iguana?
Posted by Bill Pelzmann on February 12, 2013 at 12:23 AM
I plan to attend for the weekend. Group camp sounds good.
Thanks for organizing this again, Bret.
Posted by David Kingham on February 14, 2013 at 3:41 PM
I just happen to be teaching a workshop out there that ends on Friday! I may be a little tired but I'll be there for the group camp Friday night!
Posted by Bob Falcone on February 14, 2013 at 8:00 PM
I'm a definite "maybe". It is a ways out, but this may be the only chance I have to visit Moab this year... I'll know more as it closer.
Posted by Jason J. Hatfield on February 15, 2013 at 1:09 PM
I hope to make it but it depends on timing and wether I'm in the Pacific NW then.
Posted by Angela Classen on February 15, 2013 at 7:47 PM
I plan to attend unless something comes up. It was fun last year! Doubt I'll be camping since I'm only about an hour away.
Posted by John Mumaw on February 16, 2013 at 6:22 PM
I'll be there. Thanks so much for your time and effort in putting this great event together!
Posted by Joshua Warrender on February 16, 2013 at 7:58 PM
I'm planning on attending this year. I'll have to leave after work that Friday so the sunset shoot would be out for me, but I look forward to the events on Saturday and also shooting Sunday morning.
Posted by Mike Smith on February 17, 2013 at 11:56 AM
I'll be there for sure and would be interested in the group camp out, hopefully at Dead Horse. Will be there for Friday sunset. Thanks for all your input! Any space on your Sunday workshop?
Posted by Bret Edge on February 17, 2013 at 4:30 PM
Mike: The Sunday workshop is a freebie I'm doing for DHP and WAY too basic for you. Think "this is a shutter button" basic. :-)
Posted by Bob Maynard on February 17, 2013 at 8:31 PM
I've got it on my calendar.
Posted by Grant Collier on February 18, 2013 at 3:16 AM
I plan to be there...probably won't make the group campout, though.
Posted by Rod Kissinger on February 21, 2013 at 6:58 PM
Really enjoyed last year Bret. And... if you'll let a CSNP'er attend again I'd like to attend this year.
I'm in for the group campout.
Thanks

I'm planning on joining +1 , will let you know on the group campout.
Posted by Bruce Harrington on February 25, 2013 at 9:24 PM
Look forward to this trip. Will group camp (in truck) if there is space.

Just an update: I'm trying to line up a guest speaker for a Saturday presentation on SEO and marketing for photographers. I'll keep y'all posted.

Okay, my March trip to AZ is done and time to start thinking about this deal. Bret has got things cooking for the Fling so I can't add anything to that. I know a lot of you will be headed home Sunday but I've got Monday off too so I'm thinking a little forward. Thinking about either A) Sunday night at Natural Bridges for some night sky shooting or B) blazing down to Bisti for sunset and Monday sunrise.
Any takers?
Posted by Bill Pelzmann on March 27, 2013 at 6:09 PM
Bill, I'll also be hanging around Utah after the Spring Fling, but I'd prefer to wait to see the weather forecast before committing to a location.

For some wide field night skies, how about Temple of the Sun as a foreground ?
I've just got an AstroTrac for extended exposures and am looking forward to some great desert skies.
Posted by Bill Bean on March 28, 2013 at 1:47 PM
Agreed about the weather. Never been to Temple of the Sun but from the images I've seen that would be a definite possibility. We'll talk when the time gets closer.
Posted by Karl Buiter on March 29, 2013 at 2:30 AM
I'll keep an eye on this thread for any potential post-fling photo outings further south - most likely I'll be in Phoenix that Saturday (50th Birthday) but could do something immediately after Sunday / Monday in between.
Posted by Scott Bideau on April 6, 2013 at 9:03 AM
Really wish I could make it, but have another obligation this weekend that I can't reschedule.
Posted by John Kyler on April 8, 2013 at 9:10 PM
I will have to do this next year. I have too many trips going on in that time period to ask for more time off.
Posted by Bret Edge on April 22, 2013 at 3:07 PM
Group Campout Update on May 17: All group campsites are full in parks and BLM. So, there won't be a group campout this time around. Further research revealed that at this time of year the sites have typically been reserved for several months. So, if we decide to do this next year we'll have to look into it at the end of 2013.

I'll post additional details on the Spring Fling shortly.
Posted by Pete Miller on April 22, 2013 at 9:02 PM
Well BUMMER...hmmm...options to research!

On Saturday, May 18 at about 1:00 PM digital strategist and landscape photographer Wesley Picotte will deliver a short but informative presentation on SEO for photographers at The Edge Gallery, 137 N. Main St. It is free to attend. Please bring your own chair as I don't have enough of them in the gallery for everyone.

Wesley is requesting that those who plan to attend take a few minutes to complete this short survey to help him create a presentation that best satisfies the needs and interests of his audience.

Thanks!

We will be staying at the Redstone Inn... decided not to camp. Looking forward to the trip though.
Posted by Angela Classen on May 9, 2013 at 12:33 AM
Bret, is there still a group lunch planned (at the park, or otherwise)? Or are we "on our own"?
Posted by Jack Garrett on May 9, 2013 at 12:45 AM
Looks like I'm going to have to cancel Bret. Wife needs me around for a while these days,
Posted by Mark Hespenheide on May 9, 2013 at 12:32 PM
Hey all!

I just heard from my administration that it's okay for me to take off for the fling weekend (the peril of working at a boarding school is that you can't often plan your weekends that far out while school is in session...) and am coming down.

I just got back from Bruce Hucko's Moab Photography Symposium (highly recommended, by the way) and can say that the flowers are coming on and the weather was good. There was even a chance of some storm light last Saturday, although it never quite materialized.

I'll be leaving home around 3:30 and should arrive about 7:30, so I'll be running to hit a sunset if the light and weather looks good. There's a chance that I'll be doing a short overnight backpack (!) Friday night into Saturday morning in order to be on site for a grand scenic, so let me know if you're interested in joining me for that.

Bret, let us know if we're still on for the group picnic. If not, I'd put in a vote for either Singha Thai (92 East Center) or Mi Ranchito (812 South Main) as possible group lunch spots.

Looking forwards to it!
Posted by Bret Edge on May 9, 2013 at 2:57 PM
Group lunch at the park is still the plan. I'll post other details shortly. See you all soon!
Posted by Joshua Warrender on May 14, 2013 at 3:01 PM
Is anyone planning some star shot work Friday or Saturday night? Also, I know Bret has a class Sunday morning, I was thinking maybe Marlboro Point Sunday morning if 3-4 people want a ride out. Just throwing it out there. I'll see if there are any interested at the picnic. See everyone there! :wavey:

Here's the plan for Saturday:

4:30 AM - Meet at The Edge Gallery, 137 N. Main St.
4:45 AM - Leave for Grandview Overlook in Canyonlands NP
6:03 AM - Sunrise at Grandview Overlook

After sunrise we'll return to Moab and take a short break.

11:00 AM - Meet up at the southeast corner of Swanny City Park (Park Dr. and 100 West) for a group picnic lunch. This is not potluck so bring whatever you plan to feast upon.

1:00 PM - SEO for Photographers presentation by Wesley Picotte at The Edge Gallery.
4:00 PM - Leave Moab for Canyonlands NP/False Kiva.
5:00 PM - Hike out to False Kiva for late afternoon/sunset light. This is a small, sensitive area and I would like to voluntarily limit the group size to 5 people, including me. This is a difficult hike on an unmaintained trail. Those interested in doing this hike should RSVP by leaving a comment below this post. The first 4 to RSVP have priority.
6:00 PM - The remaining group should depart Moab for a late afternoon/sunset shoot somewhere in the area. I'll recommend locations to the group prior to departing for False Kiva.

As always, let me know if you have any questions. See you all soon!

Unfortunately, I have to cancel. Hope to make it next year...
Posted by Rod Kissinger on May 15, 2013 at 11:29 AM
Bret,
Count me in for the False Kiva hike.
I had been getting information on the trail, gps locations etc..
Having someone with local knowledge will be great.

Thanks,
Rod

I'm sorry I'll be missing all the fun in Moab this weekend. Just can't get away.

Brett, I'm so glad to hear that you are limiting the False Kiva hike to five. Any more really spoils the "magic".
I was fortunate enough to be there alone for 3 hours on my first visit. It remains one of my favorite places in the southwest.
Posted by Karl Buiter on May 15, 2013 at 3:15 PM
Damn, False Kiva is right up there on my list. But I'll be down in Arizona over the weekend. Should be in the Sedona / Oak Creek and maybe Grand Canyon area Sunday and early Monday if anyone is heading south after Spring Fling. Drop me an email if you do.

Have an awesome day. I plan to!

Count us In, there will be 2 of us... If more come along, we can give up our spots.

Bret,
I finally decided I could make the fling. So, yea, count me in for the False Kiva shoot.
Any words of wisdom for a Milky Way image over Fisher Towers? Of course that is if I can secure a tent site Friday night.

I have a few errands to run Friday morning but should get out of Denver by 11 or noon. Definitely interested in a night shot somewhere. Never thought about Fisher Towers but I'm turning that around in my mind. Not too sure where I'll camp. I'm sleeping in the car so just about any place I can pull far enough off the road safely will do.
Driving a 2007 silver Dodge Nitro. (Same body as Jeep Liberty)

If the spots for False Kiva aren't filled I'm in but I don't want to bump anyone off.

Any thought towards vehicle identification devices? I and several others have the RMNP stickers but probably not everyone.

Josh, I'm up for a ride out to Marlboro Sunday morning. I'll see you Saturday for details.

See ya'll Friday or Saturday.

I've got my NPN hat and will have a sticker on my back window, I'm driving a red 2013 4Runner

we are leaving tonight and will explore the area Friday. If anyone wants to shoot Friday evening sunset we would be interested in getting together.
Posted by Joshua Warrender on May 16, 2013 at 12:30 PM
I will leave Denver tomorrow around 3, so I'm shooting for something east like Fisher towers/La Sals sunset. Then camp east and shoot something at sunrise Saturday. I will forgo False Kiva so some that haven't been can go. I'll see everyone Saturday at the picnic. :) I'm in a 2013 Silver 4 door Rubicon.

Y'all have fun and good light this weekend :wavey:

Good to meet everyone Saturday, and I hope y'all had good light over at the Kiva. Bret, thanks for organizing and hosting!

Good to see everyone this weekend. Thanks to Bret for putting this thing together. The quantity was down a little this year but the quality of companionship was excellent as always.
Posted by Joshua Warrender on May 20, 2013 at 7:56 PM
As always in Moab, I had a good time 4 wheeling around and shooting. Good to meet up and see everyone that was there. Sorry Bill, I forgot to talk to you about going to Marlboro Sunday morning(4 something hours sleep makes me more out of it than normal), but you didn't miss much. Big thanks to Bret for organizing this again.
Posted by Bill Bean on May 20, 2013 at 9:06 PM
Not a problem Josh. I wasn't feeling 100% Sunday morning. Woke up about 3:30 to see clear skies and stars so I drove up to Double Arch but couldn't get motivated to get out of the truck for a star shot. Dropped the seat back and slept through sunrise. Next year!
