I'm jumping over from SENP to mine the knowledge of you northeasterners: My wife is running the Boston Marathon on April 15 and we'll have 2 full days after to go somewhere nearby for some shooting. Mid-April is a bit early for up there and I don't know whether to head north or south from Boston?
I love the rocky coastline north of Portland but we don't want to spend the entire time driving up and back, so 2-3 hours one way would be about right. Any good places between Boston and Portland? Or go south to where?
Thanks!

I suggest mid coast Maine if you like beaches. There is Popham and Reid State Park (sandy beaches) which are about a half hour drive from Portland. Boothbay ( a little further has some nice rocky beaches at Ocean Point. You can capture both sunrise and sunset there by just driving less than a half a mile around the bend. There are many other beaches south of Portland too. The White Mountains in NH are also beautiful.

Hi Barry,
If you are looking for the rocky shoreline in Maine the closest you are likely to find will be if you take Rt 95 north through southern Maine and then take Rt 295 north through Portland and just north of Freeport and get onto Rt 1 north ( the sign on the highway says "Coastal Route"). A short drive to Brunswick or Bath will get you in position to drive south onto the many peninsula of that part of Maine with Rocky shores. I believe these are the closest to the Boston area. Some the towns you can head to will be places like Harpswell, Orr's Island, Bailey's Island, and Sebago. The state parks that Eve refers to are on the peninsula at the end of Rt 209 or Rt 127 starting at Bath. This far south these are high on housing development and lots of private property but you should be able to find some good shots, particularly around the bridges and causeway's. Get yourself a good map or better yet stop at the DeLorme plant and see Yarmouth Maine on the way north to buy a Maine Gazetteer and see their real time model of planet earth that is spinning at the same speed as the real planet earth!
Enjoy!

Barry,
Jumping over from the MWNP and RMNP forums to send you prayers for your wife's safety and your own. Just saw your post and heard about the tragedy at the race. Hope you and your loved ones are ok.

We're fine. Two blocks away when the bombs went off. Close enough to feel them but far enough to be out of harms way. this area of the city is in total lockdown today. We're going to try to get out later this morning. Thanks for the concern.
