Hi all.

I just received my new Sigma 180 macro and I am getting an error. When I attach it to my D70, the LCD blinks with 'f--'. Reading the Nikon manual, it says that this means there is a non-cpu lens attached.

Did I get a bad one? Has anyone ever seen this happening? The lens that I got says 'Nikon AF-D' on the box, and on the lens end cap.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Two options:

- CPU broken
- outdated CPU

Since the lens model you mention is a recent one (assuming also you bought it new) I guess that the CPU should work with your D70. So there must be a problem with the CPU. I suggest you try to get it replaced.

Thanks Basil. I think that is what I will have to do. I realized last night that it would not even focus. I think the whole lens is fried...

Wait, is it dialed down to the smallest aperture? f/22 or f/32 and locked there? If aperture is set by the camera, you need to stop the lens all the way down, and use the appropriate camera dial to set the aperture for exposure. Occasionally my lenses get bumped out of this position (even though Nikkors have a lock at this position) and it takes me a millisecond or two to realize what is going on.

Thanks for the suggestion Pete. It is set correctly that way. On the D70, that would blink 'Fee' instead of 'F--'. I wish that was it!
