Eagles in Haines

I'm looking at coming up to Haines to photograph the eagles. The annual festival is November 11-17. I'm probably going to avoid that week.

My question is, if I'm looking at the week of October 28 - November 1, or the week of November 4 - November 8, will it make much difference in terms of the number of eagles on the Chilkat?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Regards,

Keith

Keith -

It's all about the chum salmon run. Peak birds are at peak run levels. The birds are there before and after, but the highest density is at peak run. The Festival is timed for the peak of the salmon run, although the late chum run is a bit of a guess (fish on't use calendars).

You'll find birds there the either set of dates, probably more closer to the Festival.

I wouldn't worry too much about when the most eagles are there. Like Jim said either week you will see plenty of birds. I would go the second week. I typically go the last weekend in October and two years in a row it has snowed right after I leave. IMO the best images I've seen from Chilkat are taken in the snow. So the later the better but definately avoiding the festival is advisable for serious photographers.
