Hello David
I like your image with the clean B/G, but I do agree with Dave that the lack of DOF is particularly noticeable with such a frame filler.
Best wishes
Phil
20 feet away?
f8 would have had much the same effect on the bg as you have here surely, except that most of the bird would be rendered acceptably sharp.
Cracking pose from a great subject.
Great shot with the Wren in a perfect pose. Good choice of perch, the rusty nut works well and the background tone is a good compliment to the Wren. I agree with the earlier posts that you probably could get away with stopping down a bit more for some extra DOF on the bird without the background suffering too much. However I don't mind the OOF tail, I didn't notice it on first look as the overall composition is so strong anyway.
For presentation purposes I try this shot cropped to a square format and lose some of the left hand side, but for editorial purposes the rectangular format is ideal.
Nice, the OOF tail doesn't bother me much as the pose and the fact that the bird really stands out from the bg lift it for me, I do agree that perhaps f8 would have taken it up a notch, cracking image though and one to be very pleased with...

Deliberately shot wide open as the BG 'patch of nettles' was only about 20 feet behind the bird and may not have been so smooth if I had stopped down!
