Coot Behavior

Coot Behavior
When I was at Ridgefield the other day, I saw this group of coots digging for something in the roadway. My only conjecture is that someone dumped food of some kind out their window, but the dirt on the beaks looks like they were probing pretty deep. Has anyone else seen this kind of behavior or have any conjectures?

I have a similar picture I took at Merritt Island in Feb. I have been going there for 30 plus years and never saw this behavior. I looked it up this morning and the answer is that eating gravel aids in their digestion.
