I am heading south shortly with a planned stop in the Hatteras-Ocracoke area for some photography. Does anyone have any recommendations for bird photography spots in that area of the Outer Banks?
Well, I've been that way a couple of times, not just for birds, though. I always spent time at Pea Island NWR, http://www.fws.gov/peaisland/ , which had an impressive (at least to me) sightings list, and clearly is a birder's destination.
And also spent time in the Buxton Woods reserve, http://www.nccoastalreserve.net/About-The-Reserve/Reserve-Sites/Buxton-Woods/84.aspx , which was remarkable to me for the number of snakes, which is mostly what I was looking for at the time, I ran across (or in one case, ran across me :) in one little half mile loop: 5 water mocassins, two black racers chasing each other down the trail, right over my foot, an Outerbanks Kingsnake, and several baby black racers.
