I shot Fallen roof last summer and it pretty much faces west, so morning is best. I was in an out of there by Noon. But I feel that I could easily have gone there at Sunrise and been done by 9.
Which begs the question. Can you do Fallen Roof in the morning, and then head to Roof on fire and still get good light? What is the best time for roof on fire? Anyone know?
Thinking about adding it to our White Pocket itinerary. My buddy has wanted to shoot these ruins for over a year.

Rodney, I was at Fallen and Fire Roofs last year Mar 31 & Apr1. My last shot at Fallen was at 10AM and the last at HOF was noon (MST) per my exif data. At noon, the sun was encroaching pretty good on the rock apron in front of HOF. You may have to hike and drive like demons to do both in a morning, imo. Two days woudl be better with a night in between overlooking the San Juan Goosenecks.

Thank you Doug. I looked at photos of the goosenecks and wasn't too impressed. Are you saying they are good at sunset? Or is there a campground there and you're referring to that?

Maybe better than the goosenecks would be Valley of the Gods, or the Raplee anticline at Mexican Hat at sunset
No formal campground in these locations.
The Goosenecks are pretty spectacular and in the right conditions they photograph extremely well. You'd need a killer sky for it, though.

Thanks Bret. If we head that way, we will keep an eye on the sky.

What a timely question, Rodney! JR and I are heading out that way at the end of April and were wondering the same thing!

Anne, when you hike to Fallen Roof, there are many use trails that get confusing. After you leave the forested area, you cross a small side stream, this is not the access to Road Canyon. Climb up again and walk some more above the canyon. Follow that trail until you see ducks leading you down, and to the right into the wash. Stay in the creek bed and follow it for a few hundred yards, till it opens to the left and right and turn right.
I got confused and spent 30 mins wandering around on top, because there are many ducks that lead no where. Hope that isn't too confusing.

Thanks, Rodney! Any little bit helps as far as finding these things. We wandered around for a while looking for False Kiva because we followed the wrong wash. I am hoping GPS will help as well. Have fun in White Pocket! We have been there once and absolutely loved it!

I've been into both these sites many times. Both are doable in one day, but you would need to be at Fallen Roof before Sunrise, heading down the trail at civil twilight. Noon is a bit late for House on Fire. 10 - 11 AM is best.
