A break from posting landscapes... for now...
Red squirrel in snow (in case you were not sure)
As ever all C&C welcomed
Frame added just for uknp so you can see where the picture begins...

Hi Phil,
Love your idea here and the high key effect.
Think the images oculd use some more contrast though and perhaps some adjusting in midtones also.
Furthermore i would like to see the squirrel in the left bottom corner with a lot of space to the right.
greetings,
Jeroen Stel

Contrast is much better but feel the Squirrel is "floating" too much so would place it a bit lower in the frame.
kind regards,

If your christian name was Vincent and your surname began with "M" you'd get away with this Phil; but sadly, it ain't, so you won't
Jeroen is spot-on - it's "floating" a little too much; it just needs a vestige of the foreground snow detail to "anchor" it.
And for some odd reason I actually prefer the initial comp.
But the creativity is heading 100% in the right direction, just needs throttling back a touch in the FG.

The first one I prefer but agree with Uncle Andy about the anchor. Get the shadow/highlight tool out and put all the sliders to 100% (ducks ofr cover)... :) No really, just a touch of detail under the squidger will finish it off nicely.

Hi Phil, agree with other comments on the need for some definition in the snow to anchor the subject but it is a brilliant idea.

In gist I think you're nearly on the money, but the execution looks a little "smudgy" and dare I say slightly false.
I suspect part of the problem is perhaps you are pushing the whiteness of the snow too much in initial processing Phil - there's too much contrast in the whites for you to differentiate them between FG and BG.
Start again, and build the effect you are after - seriously, this is 10 minutes work at the max - now get on with it!

Somewhere near this for the immediate FG Phil - just that bit more definition (but this rework looks cr*p of such a small jpeg).

The last post looks good to me Phil. The squirrel looks great in this type of image.
