Pileated Woodpecker portrait
Not to be mistaken for the illusive Ivory-billed woodpecker  this pileated woodpecker was illusive enough for me. It took 4 trip and 6 hours on station in below freezing temperatures waiting for this beautiful specimen to show up. Only the second one I've ever seen in the wild.

While not particularly uncommon, I live on the extreme western edge of its eastern range.

It is epic waits like that why I photograph rocks and trees........

You have had some great luck with the birds this year and this is also nice, like he is posing for you with a smile.

Beautiful, Wayne. Well worth the effort to achieve this level of detail and near perfection.
