I recently have been loaned a Canon 50D, but no manual came with it. I would like to set it for back button focusing, but have not figured out how. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows how to do this, with this camera.

John:
Go to Menu
Choose the custom functions group (second to the last icon from the right)
Select C.FN IV: Operations/Others
The first option labeled Shutter button / AF-ON button is the place to set this.
I have mine set to option 2: Metering Start / Meter + AF start which says the shutter button is only Metering Start and the AF-On button is the button.
I you would rather use the * button for AF then the second option in the C.Fn IV group labeled AF-ON/AE lock button switch button should be enabled. That simply switches the functions of the * button and the AF-On button.

Thanks Keith, worked well. I appreciate you taking the time to help me with this.

John: If you go to the Canon USA website and poke around you can find the manuals available as PDF downloads. I usually download them for my cameras just to have a reference if I need it.

Thanks Dennis, I doubt if I would have thought to go there. Worked fine. Another + for being a NPN member.
