This topic has been brought up repeatedly, so I would like to share some of my techniques and experiences of backing up photos using a tablet while traveling.
It is difficult to post the complete long guide here, and I cannot figure out a way to insert images in this post (I guess that I cannot) Please check my recent blog post instead:
Basically, I use a Nexus 7 tablet, which weights merely 12 Oz. The best thing about Android based device is that after you root it, you can easily connect external hard disk drives to it so you can backup your photos from CF/SD cards to disk drives. Sure if you jailbreak an iPad you can also do it, but the process is much more complicated. Moreover, Apple discourages you from doing this and makes it harder and harder with each new generation of iOS. You don’t know what will happen next.
This is perfect. I'm heading out for several weeks soon and do not want to take my laptop with me. My Nexus7 is great and you just made it better. Thanks for posting !!!!
The only problem that I have encountered so far is that sometimes the hard disk mounting operation will fail. Sometimes I need to try a few times by unplugging the cable and putting it back.
However, this is probably due to some bad connection problems of the micro-USB port of my Nexus 7. I have problems when I connect the tablet to my PC also and I have to re-insert the cable when it happens. Sometimes the tablet reboots itself when I plug/unplug the cable.
I would like to hear your experience with the setup.
