Just a garden Blue Tit

Unearthed my big lens for the first time in ages and tried it with the Olympus 2x teleconverter. This is the time I have used the combination in earnest for wildlife photography. Given past experiences with most major manufacturers 2x converters I was expecting a greater image degradation compared to a more standard 1.4 tc combination especially using only a 1/2 stop adjustment.

Olympus E-3, 300mm F2.8, 2x converter (effective field of view 1,200mm), iso 800, 1/60s at f6.7, (ie 1/2 stop closure), Tripod, jpeg file cropped slightly, processed in PS Elements and Neatimage. A couple of OOF background twigs removed.

A wonderful look back pose here Mike. Do feel the image is slightly oversharpened (perhaps due to some sharpening in NeatImage) but shows loads of detail.
Feel this would work really well as a square crop too.

Mike

So you want detail, they don't come any better.

I agree with Jeroen that the image looks a little over-sharpened, but it is still a strong advert for what the Olympus converter can do.

I've reprocessed the noise reduction step with no sharpening on the smaller jpeg, does this look any better now?

Second looks ok Mike but I reckon could do with some levels adj or whatever to "beef" it up a bit.
Nice pic though.

Mike in all honesty I think the original post looks spot on to me for Blue tit at this time of the year very natural IMHO ,could be my eyes but I don't have a problem with the sharpening good one!

Possibly somewhere between the two posts I think. Nice BT image Mike.

Yeo somewhere in between would work. A tadge BIF for me and removing the second cross twig would enhance the image a little
