Black rat (re-identified as brown rat)
Cheeky little chaps but inevitable garden visitor as I live along a railway line. Between these, woodpigeons and squirrels it has cost be a fortune in bird seed this winter!

Olympus E-3, 300mm f2.8 plus 2x tc, tripod, iso 400, 1/125s at F5.6. Small compositional crop.

Very under-photographed rodent is the rat - and the tail clipping doesn't make me want to jump all over the image either - the viewers attention goes straight to the rats eye and it takes a while to notice the tail.

Are you sure it's a Blacky though??

Thanks Andy - I'm not a great rodent expert, but when I Wikki'd rats the large ears and tail longer than body indicated Black rather than Brown, but as I say I'm no expert!

Now I do like rats, I personally think they are brilliant, like the crow family, survivors. I am not sure those ears are big enough though Mike, black rats have really big uns!

Nice shot, I'm a rat fan too - very clean and intelligent animals! The large version looks like it could do with a touch more sharpening, but a very well composed image.

I am also in awe of the rats survival instincts but would not want them as house guests....the mice are bad enough! Great shot Mike, some lovely detail on the face.
