The local paper here in Riverside County had a complete article with more information outlining the possible reasons behind this unusual bloom as well as making a point on some of the locations too. Obviously Joshua Tree NP will have it's share of the event, but there are locations in the outer Mojave area with it's strong growth of the trees as well.
If traveling to So Cal right now is the best time of the year for the deserts too, but won't last too long either. We are already seeing warmer temps and reports on rattlesnake bites locally here. If traveling to the area never underestimate the temperature swings almost year around. Carry LOTS of water.
I just got back from Nevada/Utah. The Joshua trees around the Virgin River gorge were loaded with blooms. I didn't realize the bloom is usually much sparser. Kinda exciting to find out I witnessed (and of course photographed) a "once in a lifetime" event. I thought they were very beautiful.

2 repliesThere is an unusual mass blooming of Joshua trees in California's Mojave Desert.
Here is an article from the AP posted on my local news site about this occurrence. Link
If you are headed to CA, it may be worth a trip to the desert.
