Here's a female stonechat from the weekend down at Minsmere.

Nikon D70, 70-200mm + 2x
F/8 1/500s
cropped about 10%

I can see it OK, And I quite like it. All that gorse makes for an unusual picture, and the yellow complements the colours of the bird. My only nit is the area of white at the top. The blown sky is a bit of a distraction. I'd be tempted to clone across a chunk of the OOF gorse to cover it - should be pretty straightforward seeing as the BG is so blurred.

Anyway, lovely shot IMO.

Gosh from West coast to East coast, you certainly get about!

nice image but agree that the pale sky detracts, I can see a crop taking out the left brown bit of scraggy gorse bush and pale sky leaves a wonderfull image of yellows greens and orange

Hi Graham

For some reason I don't get the image displayed. I hit refresh but that didn't help.

cheers

Saw It a minute ago, now it's disappeared???

From what I remember seeing I like the pose of the stonechat and the bright yellow of the gorse background. I agree the bit of sky detracts slightly from the image but rather than cloning I might be tempted to crop to landscape losing a bit from the bottom as well.

I like Michael`s idea of cloning the gorse to cover the bright sky background. You could, of course, crop it out, but then would lose some of the environment which makes this shot so much more interesting (to my eyes) than the typical BOAS shot we see. Having said that, the picture actually works quite well as a square crop. This is a shot depicting Stonechats in the typical habitats in which I see them on the Gower.
Like the shot lots!

Now I try to look at it again, it`s gone. :frown: Mysterious!

Very nice shot Graham - don't think I've seen one this year - all my local ones seem to have dispappeared or they are hiding.

The bit of sky doesn't serve any purpose - a square crop seems very fitting to me.

Hi Graham,

another vote to get rid of the white sky, and as Jermey said, it works nicely in a square format. I think you may also need to check the white balance as it appears a bit on the yellow side...might just be all the gorse though

Love the idea here, it is almost there, a square crop might work but I think I would go for cloning the light sky out as I feel that the bird sits less comfortably in a square, there does indeed appear to be a slight yellow cast, that you could tone down a shade with a selective layer, but that is only minor.

Well seen and taken.

Great image,
Think i would clone not crop. Like the space around the bird.

Thanks for all the comments. I agree with you all about the sky - the reason I left it was because I didn't like the crop with the bird so close to the top but I will give the cloning a try.

Sorry to those who are having problems seeing it. I think its probably because i'm still using a geocities site for storing the photos but hopefully thats going to change soon and I'll get a probper website set up so it shouldn't be a problem in future.
