So technically this is not a Missouri waterfall but close enough that it is right over the river to a place I have self named the "Illinois Waterfall District"

This area had so many waterfalls that I lost count, it's one of the best locations I have come across for waterfalls in the Midwest other than Arkansas. I can not wait to see this place come alive after some really good rain.

And the best part, this little Oasis is hidden in the middle of cornfields and farmland

Mark, cool pic! The liverwort covered rock is a nice focal point. I was once based out of Carbondale and scoured the hills of southern Illinois over a 14-year period but I am not sure if I ever saw this place. Would it happen to be in Randolph County and be named Piney Creek Ravine Natural Area??

Thanks Don!
I love this forum, you guys are always so knowledgeable but I cant keep a location secret... lol

yes Don, you nailed the location

They also have a 60ft waterfall at this location that I will post up in a couple of days, the waterfall above was located a bit off the beaten path at the backside of the loop trail. Also in this area are two more wet weather waterfalls with outstanding cascades.

A loop trail! Boy, back in the good ol' days, a photographer would have to bushwack their way to the ravine. Ha!

You may know that shortleaf pine, although very common in the Ozarks, is endangered in Illinois. Piney Creek Ravine and Pine Hills/LaRue Swamp Ecological Area, both on the very eastern edge of the Ozarks, are the only two places where shortleaf pine occurs in Illinois.

When I was working on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory last century  , Piney Creek Ravine was one of the areas that I inventoried. Cool place indeed!

Thanks for sharing!

Mark - nice composition. It looks a little warm/green to me, though. Was that intentional? Just curious. Thanks for posting.

Nice partner, and yes, an Oasis of falls. Excellent view, lovely comp.

What a beautiful place to photograph Mark! Definitely not the kind of terrain I think of when I think of Illinois. I do wish the water weren't so brown, but still nice.

OK Don, is this a monster concretion in the FG? Sure looks like it...whatever it is it makes a great FG anchor, along with the liverwort.

Bill, yes, this could be a large concretion. Those formed by iron oxides are common in these sandstone stratas.
