I was eating lunch out on my deck this afternoon and looked up to find this strange cloud phenomenon happening right above me. I quickly put a circular polarizer filter on my lens and snapped this. I could see the distinct rainbow happening in the circular cloud all around the sun even through my polarized sun glasses.
Stan: is there some sort of explanation for this circular loud pattern?
Nice catch Scott, that's a Sun Halo, from Wikipedia, "...produced by ice crystals creating colored or white arcs and spots in the sky. Many are near the sun or moon but others are elsewhere and even in the opposite part of the sky. They can also form around artificial lights in very cold weather when ice crystals called diamond dust are floating in the nearby air."
