Nick, it's unfortunate that they are where they are considering the amount of mush all around, however that's wildlife so not much you can do. I might try toning down the brighter ones and lose the one directly at the back of the head just below the eyebrow. Reducing the amount of yellow also helps. In addition I would look at the more visible eyebrow, slightly desaturating the reds & yellow and adjusting a few sliders in your RAW converter targeting that area works and will help bring out the definition needed.
Wasnt sure about this at first but its growing on me now although I do prefer your previous grouse post The grass stems are fine for me as its their habitat. Did you consider cropping in a bit tighter?
Hi Nick, personally I think it is now a combination of the two. I feel the surrounding in the RP is now too red and the yellow in the OP seems to have helped, but the subject is better in the RP. I have photographed these 1000's of times and I appreciate they can be difficult, like most, but the eye brows are the hard part to get right and without seeing the RAW it's hard to recommend what you need to adjust in the RAW converter ie exposure, clarity, shadow etc... but if you soft proof I think you can see where the colours are 'out of gamut' which I think is happening here, but Mr A is far better equipped for more in depth than I am! Loosing the blade behind the head is certainly an improvement, but with the head looking away it's not ideal IMHO.

8 repliesI would appreciate your honest opinions on this shot. I am unsure whether the grass stems spoil the shot or add to the intimacy of it.
Many thanks for the comments on my Roe deer post, greatly appreciated as always.
