I've been down there once for a fall colors photography trip, but I was traveling lean and sleeping in my car. Going to take the family with me this July to see the wild flowers, which means we'll be in the popup. I know about the typical campgrounds like Lake Irwin, but I'm curious if there are any "off the beaten path" spots for a popup that you've run across. I know up here in Steamboat there are several spots along the flat tops, Buffalo pass, etc. that can accommodate a popup but aren't an official campground (with the associated noise, city slickers, etc).
This will be over 4th of July holiday, although I'll get there on the 3rd, probably around 3pm.
Scott, this is just a suggestion. Try scanning the area with google earth and see what you can find for spots off the beaten path. I often use it to get an idea of what a location is like before I go. It's proven to be helpful in most cases.
Best bet would be the west side of Kebler Pass. Horse Ranch Park is the biggest/easiest access but will be most likely be crowded.
All the other non-official campgrounds near Crested Butte should be filled well before the weekend. You might try Brush Creek road, just after it starts climbing out of the valley.

Lost Lake CG is first come-first serve and can accommodate pop-ups. It is a nice campground right on Lost Lake Slough up the road to Kebler and good for the family. It could be worth looking into depending what day you arrive (if it's Friday night or Saturday, it may be hard to get a place). It is kind of tucked back off the road so I think many people miss it.

Thanks in advance!
