From the Fling
Kind of a sparse crowd at the Spring Fling this year but it was good company. Big kudos to Bret again. Sunrise at Grandview Point, good conversation at the park, excellent sunset at False Kiva. Good weekend all around.
I'll get the posting started with this one. Sunday I was trying to figure out if I wanted to hang around or find another location. Drove over to Goblin Valley State Park and took the road up to Little Wild Horse Canyon. I don't usually even take the camera out of the bag at noon but this scene caught my eye. Lots of buff colored rock acted as a giant reflector and filled in the shadows of the tree.

And my version of False Kiva. Kind of an amusing story to the hike down but I'll let Bret or one of the other folks fill you in on that.

Beautiful image, Bill...even if this was the only image you got, I would consider the trip well worth it..

Nice shots Bill. I'm glad that the weather worked out for you guys at the Kiva. Mark and I were in Arches and it looked pretty socked in over there.

Very nice. Wish I was able to have been there.

Josh, it was definitely socked in. I wasn't even going to make the hike but there was a break in the cloud deck on the horizon that I thought was going to work out. I think it did.

I like the B&W Bill, but the second image of Kiva for me is stunning. I like how the rocks form an incomplete heart shape and frame the lighting for the canyon beyond.

I like this version much better than the FB post Bill...you nailed it!

I love those dramatic clouds from False Kiva. :toast:

You and Bret have set a high bar for images from the fling - I'm going to be reluctant to post mine  The b/w image is nice but the Kiva shot is amazing! It was great to meet and hang out with you on Saturday.

Thank you Angela. It was a pleasure meeting you and putting a face to a name. The great part of these group shoots is that even though we might be standing next to each other our vision and execution of an image is often quite different. Bret's composition is different than mine. I think my shot has better light on the valley floor but he used fill flash to make the kiva really pop. Result: Same location but different interpretation of the scene. Post away, it's always nice to see what others were thinking.

Well captured Bill! Certainly don't believe my images can top this one, but it would be interesting to view everyone's interpretation of the same scene. Bret, I hope you post at least the hand held image you took as we left. I'm sure that's a composition that not many have tried.

I love the shot of the False Kiva, the lighting and colors and details are awesome, an absolutely wonderful capture. Thanks for sharing.

Both are nice images Bill.
I really love the Kiva photo...it's one of my favorite places both to visit and photograph.

Your image of the False Kiva is one that every photographer dreams of capturing. Congratulations, Bill!!

Nice work, Bill! As Josh said, when we were over at Arches and looking back to the west, it seemed sure that y'all weren't getting any of "zee good light". I'm glad that wasn't the case.

If you don't mind my saying so, the rock (both the foreground and the walls) looks a touch green to my eye. Perhaps a combination of the strongly blue sky and the sunlight on the cliffs? At any rate, you might want try adding a few points of magenta to those areas and see if you prefer that.

Great shot.

Nice light on the far cliffs and you had some very interesting clouds to go with that. Critiquewise, to me the image looks a little flat/muddy and could use some mid-tone contrast and a little brightening of the foreground alcove. The composition looks real good and this makes me wish I had been able to attend.
