Crop or not ? No.1000
Pearl Bordered Fritillary
First of the year,
Tried a new technique. Nikor 70-300mm with one small extension tube on.
Flash and sunlight. F11
70% of full frame
Nikon D7100
post-processing in Paint Shop pro.
Problem with the top left corner- some say take it out –others say leave it .
Ideas welcome.
Cheers
Just noticed - topic no 1000 !Crikey.

PS
With the appalling conditions last year, and now this, butterflies are in for a really bad time.

I would leave it as it is, John. If you crop it out the butterfly has nowhere to look. Are the colours natural? It looks a wee bit over-saturated on my screen. I fear you are right about another poor year for butterflies.

Funnily enough thats how it came out ! The sun made a brief appearance and fooled every one. Maybe the flash has overdone it a bit. Easily rectified anyway, but in these dismal times we could do with a bit of brightening up !!!

I would also suggest leaving it in as the shot is. Wonderful butterfly wich we never see donw here unfortunately..
There is a small dus speck in the lower left corner wich might have escaped your post processing but other then that it looks good to me the way it was with a bit more saturation.

greetings,

Leave it, I like the first actually.

John I prefer the first shot for colour and comp. The top left corner sets of the subject for me and works well

For what its worth a female member of my staff has just looked over my shoulder and said 'thats gorgous that is' in a broad scouse accent, God knows what she is doing in Essex

John, I like the first composition. You might try using one of the shade colours from another part of the image to brush over the top left sky at a reduced strength so that the butterfly stands out more.

Hi John,
I prefer the first as is. Great shot by the way and as Jeroen told, never seen him here.
