I am planning a probably 2 to 3 days outting at the end of this month. Would anyone recommend north clear creek falls near Creede? If so, any place nearby that I shouldn't miss?
I was out there last year about this time and while the falls were flowing really strong, the water was very sediment laden. Wasn't terribly photogenic imho. Not sure what it might be doing this year, but if the conditions are right it's definitely a great place to spend a couple of hours.
There are some interesting old mining buildings just outside of town to the north. You can continue the drive up to a parking area and then a short hike up to a ridge gets you a nice view of San Luis, among others. If you have 4 wheel drive there's a loop you can take (if it's open yet). A ways east of Creede is the Wheeler Geologic Area. To get back to it will require a 4x4 or a rather long hike, though it's definitely worth it.
