I know - probably a bit late for bluebell shots - but the hebrides are heaving with them at the moment, so if anyone is heading up that way, take some bluebell gear :)
This was taken at just after sunrise, on one if the islands. Thoughts appreciated :)
Certainly a different shot Mark but I am not sure what you are trying to achieve as there is nothing to focus on. The bluebells are quite dominant but also untidy, perhaps if one had been isolated more would have helped. Did you light them with flash as they are backlit yet also lit if that makes sense? Nice to see a different take on flower photography though.
Great for thinking out of the box, but doesn't quite work for me, light drop off on the blue bells is a bit too great, perhaps retry with "painting with light" technique to fill out the more distant blue bells rather than flash?
hi mike and nick, thanks for the feedback...interesting thoughts. personally i didn't like the shot when i took it, but when it is on full screen it has a certain something. the composition is not ideal, i think there's not enough going on mid to bottom left, and this could be filled with painting in some light as mike says, however, as you'll notice, the sun is already up and so the scene was pretty much full daylight to the naked eye, so no chance to paint anything in. the fore/rear lighting was an effort to get something of the fading sunrise, subtle red light, but still show the bluebells without washing out the light in the BG. there was a fair bit of misty haze at ground level that easily burnt out subtle the subtle shades of blue...
all in all a tricky subject...but nice to see them in a treeless environment for once. one passer by asked me whether the area was once woodland....i resisted the opportunity for a good wind up
Not much to add, I don't think it quite works, but it is certainly a very dramatic shot, and it is always worth experimenting when you have the chance.
