One from this morning, Woodcock on a dry stone wall. Never thought I would see a Woodcock up on high heather moorland and never sat out in the open on a dry stone wall.

Thanks for the feedback on the Whitethroat shot and thanks for looking.
More shots and a write up on the blog for those interested.
Very unusual shot Andy and its a stonking image matey! I like the second one on your blog although feel sorry for it having a bad foot, like you I hope it mends. I love the lichens on the rocks, you have a great site by the sound of it!
Not as unusual as you might think - Woodcock are often on high moorland, just people don't expect them or look for them there. Nice & quiet, lots of nesting cover, and plenty of wet flushes/sykes/grips for them to feed at and take their youngsters to feed - same reason the other waders like curlew, lappies and snipes are up there.
Lovely photo of the Woodie. I'd have liked a slightly shallower angle on the bird (ie it was on a lower wall) as it looks like you were shooting up at it, but you have to take what you're given with encounters like those.

My thoughts exactly. I wonder what happened to put it there.
