Meanwhile, in New Mexico.....
Jaroso Fire in the Pecos Wilderness. Currently at 6000 acres and burning towards Truchas Peaks/Lakes. Some of the most beautiful country in NM. This is our 4th fire in as many weeks. Will there be anything beautiful left after this summer??? :frown:

Very tragic stuff here. Are all these fires caused by man? I can't really recall the last time this area (or AZ) received any lightning storms. Really hoping there are no more fires out here this year.

Looks like a bloody volcano eruption.

On that note, the Black Forest Fire plume looked almost as bad yesterday, and the Green Mountain Fire (burning in RMNP), though still reported at 300-400 acres, was putting out enough smoke yesterday afternoon to make me think it had grown much larger.

Here's to an early and wet monsoon season.

This fire is lightning caused as is another large fire in SW NM. The other two that are burning now (another in the Pecos and one int eh Jemez) were caused by downed power lines.

Impressive shot, Phil, much as I wish you didn't have the opportunity. Despite all the philosophy about change, dynamic ecosystems, natural processes and so on, it's hard not to be bummed out right now. I've got a very bad feeling about the Jarosa Fire; it has very solid potential to become a 100,000+ acre blaze in the heart of New Mexico's finest alpine wilderness. This is where it's rapidly headed. The Silver Fire down south is a real bummer too, that south end of the Black Range is one of our last unburned sky islands with lush forest, secret maple stands in the canyons. Hillsboro Lake is where that one's headed: just a pond farther north, but a unique oasis down there above the Chihuahuan Desert.

On the (very subtle) bright side, at least we made it till June. This winter was so bad, I thought we'd be seeing burns like this back in April.

Well, at least ours are all out in the boonies and not burning houses. Sending good thoughts your way, Front Rangers....

WAY too many fires already this season. Sure hope rain comes to these areas sometimes soon. That cloud of smoke is ridiculously high.
