Based on member suggestions, you can now upload a single large (500kb/1200 pixel) file and the standard 720 pixel version will be automatically generated. I have posted a photo here using this new method - the quality of the 720 version looks quite good.

If you prefer to maintain full control of how the 720 pixel version is presented, you can still prepare it yourself and upload it at the same time as the larger version, just as before.

The Posting Guidelines have been updated to reflect this new feature and can be viewed here.

Our thanks to all for offering your suggestions and helping to continuously improve the NPN website!

Cool! Saves some time for us, and this is even better than just offering automatic re-sizing, since it offers the do-it-yourself option for control freaks.

Thanks!

Thanks! That's 300kb/pic & will save some hard drive space! Sharon

Jim,

Thanks for making this happen! The convenience will be universally appreciated.

If I correctly understand how this works, if we post images that are on our personal website, via the image's URL, we would still have to create the 'gallery' image and the 'large version' just as we've always done. Is my thinking correct, here?

Thank you very much for your continuous support to this site overall, Jim. Your linked example looked great too !!!
I cannot say the sizing processing was ever an issue for me beyond compression items on the larger size images. However, I do look forward to trying out the new AUTO down sizing posting process soon.

Thanks Jim. Along the lines of Preston's comments, I'd offer a suggestion. It appears that the dialogue box for Post a Photo is actually unchanged. And the many who host their own images (which really then has no restrictions on file size) is still an option so that is great. But Preston raises a good question. If I post a link to an image rather than upload it to the NPN server AND I upload the larger version, how do you determine which 720px version is getting posted? The linked version, OR the NPN resized version? I guess I can go try it out, I'm due for another posting here and I'll know soon enough. My linked images have frames, but my larger view does not.

Anyway, my suggestion is to add a brief comment in the dialogue box that indicates the larger view will automatically generate a 720px view. I'm guessing that not everyone will read this thread and will have no idea of the change and will continue to post 2 of their own versions.

Definitely an appreciated step for many I'm sure. Like Paul, I was fine with posting images. In fact I post only images that fit my own site and are actually smaller at 684px than the allowed 720px.

Preston, this is for hosted photos only. I'd have to research, but I believe linked photos account for only a tiny fraction of photos displayed on NPN.

Lon, Posting Guidelines updated with new feature. Plus, there will be an email going out to all members.

I think the best feature is that we didn't lose the old features, just added a new and improved one. I say that because my process won't change, I still create the smaller size for my website, and I host my own image.

BTW Jim. I ran through the front page the other day, and you'r right, only 4 images out of 48 were hosted on a server outside NPN; that's less than 10%. I thought it may have been higher.

Many thanks Jim. I am sure the new feature will be appreciated by almost everyone. :toast:

Ahhhhhhhhhh, love this and had been wondering why we didn't have this available for awhile now!! Thanks! It may sound "small", but is a BIG help IMO.

Jim, this technique didn't work for me on the flora gallery.

Jim- Any chance to add this feature to the Regional forum replies? When posting multiple pics to a thread it will not accept the 1200/500. Still need to make a new resized image.
